Google review removal for retail stores

Shops, boutiques and multi-store retailers collect Google reviews from walk-in customers, online shoppers and passers-by. This page explains how retailers can approach Google review removal when a review is fake, describes the wrong store or makes false accusations against staff.

How reviews affect retailers

Shoppers check reviews to judge whether a store is worth the trip, whether it honours returns, and how they will be treated at the counter. For retailers with several locations, each store has its own listing, and reviews meant for one can land on another. Online orders complicate things further: an unhappy online customer may review the nearest physical store, which may have had nothing to do with the order.

Typical review problems for retailers

  • Reviews about a different branch or a different shop on the same street.
  • Reviews from online customers about delivery problems handled entirely by a separate warehouse or courier.
  • Reviews after a security or loss-prevention incident accusing staff of assault or racism as fact.
  • Refund disputes described as "illegal" when the store's position may be lawful.
  • Reviews from competitors, or from accounts that review only rival stores.
  • Reviews naming junior staff and commenting on them personally.

What may be challengeable, and what is protected

Google's content policy prohibits fake engagement, conflict-of-interest reviews, harassment, personal information and off-topic content, and requires reviews to be about the specific location. A review describing another branch can be reported on that basis. A specific false factual accusation against an identifiable staff member, such as an invented claim of physical assault, may be defamatory and could support a legal removal request.

Shoppers are entitled to criticise prices, range, queues and staff attitude. Refund complaints are a common example. Under the Australian Consumer Law, retailers generally do not have to refund for a change of mind but cannot exclude the consumer guarantees for faulty goods. A customer who is unhappy about a lawful no-refund decision can still say so; the review is their opinion, and it will not be removed.

Evidence to preserve

  • Screenshots of the review, the reviewer profile and the date.
  • Point-of-sale receipts, returns logs and refund records for the date described.
  • Online order records showing which site fulfilled the order.
  • Incident reports and CCTV, retained internally.
  • Rosters for the staff member mentioned.
  • Your posted returns policy as it appeared on the day.

How G-DEFENCE works with retailers

  1. Send the review links, including the store location, with a brief summary.
  2. We assess each review against Google's policy and Australian law, and tell you clearly which we consider challengeable.
  3. We lodge complaints through Google's official channels. Multi-store retailers can submit reviews for several listings at once, and our volume rates apply.
  4. Google decides; you are invoiced only for removed reviews.
  • 1 review: AU$469 per removed review
  • 2–4 reviews: AU$455 per removed review
  • 5–9 reviews: AU$439 per removed review
  • From 10 reviews: AU$425 per removed review

Australian dollars, plus GST where applicable. No removal, no fee.

Realistic outcomes

Wrong-location reviews and verifiably false accusations against staff are generally the stronger cases. Complaints about refund decisions, prices and service usually remain. Timing depends on Google and the evidence. See Google review removal for an overview of the service.

Frequently asked questions

An online customer reviewed our physical store about a late parcel. Is that off-topic?

It may be, if the store had no role in the order. Evidence showing fulfilment came from elsewhere helps. If the store did handle the order, for example click-and-collect, the review is probably on-topic.

A customer we stopped for suspected shoplifting called our guard racist. What now?

That is a serious allegation. If it is presented as a fact and is untrue, it may be challengeable; if it reflects the customer's honest perception of how they were treated, it may be opinion. Preserve incident records and get advice before replying publicly.

Can we post a reply quoting our refund policy?

Yes, explaining your general policy is fine. Avoid details of the customer's transaction or identity.

We have 30 stores. Is there a bulk rate?

Yes. Fees are per successfully removed review, with lower per-review rates once two, five and ten or more reviews are removed, as shown in the pricing table.
