Google Review Removal for Sydney Businesses

G-DEFENCE helps Sydney businesses with Google review removal where a review appears fake, defamatory or in breach of Google's content policy. We work entirely remotely: there is no Sydney office, and none is needed to use Google's official complaint channels.

Why Sydney reviews carry so much weight

Sydney is Australia's largest city, and that scale changes how Google reviews work. In most suburbs a customer searching for a dentist, physio, conveyancer or plumber sees a dozen comparable businesses on the map within a few kilometres. When the options look similar, the star rating and the most recent reviews often decide who gets the call. One fabricated one-star review can push a practice below a competitor on the same street.

Review-heavy sectors in Sydney include health and allied health, professional services, real estate, hospitality and the trades that serve a large and mobile population of renters and owners. Our clients include a dental clinic in Sydney, and health practices face a particular bind: they often cannot answer a review in detail without breaching patient confidentiality. Our pages on dental clinics, medical practices and real estate cover the patterns we see in those sectors.

What can and cannot be removed

Google decides what stays up. It will consider removing reviews that break its policies, such as fake engagement, conflicts of interest, harassment, hate speech, personal information and off-topic content, and it has a separate legal route for content that may be unlawful under local law. A genuine customer's honest criticism, even a harsh one, is lawful and usually stays. We tell Sydney businesses that plainly at the assessment stage, because pursuing a genuine review wastes time and can look like an attempt to suppress feedback, which the ACCC treats as potentially misleading.

  • Likely candidates: reviews from people with no record of being customers, clusters posted within hours, reviews from a competitor or ex-employee, reviews naming staff with false allegations, or reviews containing private details.
  • Unlikely candidates: a real patient unhappy with a wait time, a fee, or the outcome of treatment, expressed as opinion.

The New South Wales legal context

Defamation in Sydney is governed by the Defamation Act 2005 (NSW), part of the national Model Defamation Provisions. NSW led the national reform process. The Stage 1 amendments commenced on 1 July 2021, adding a serious harm element, a mandatory concerns notice before proceedings, and a single publication rule for limitation periods. The Stage 2 amendments on digital intermediaries such as search engines and platforms commenced in NSW on 1 July 2024.

Two practical points follow. First, most companies cannot sue for defamation at all: only an "excluded corporation" (a not-for-profit, or a business with fewer than 10 employees that is not related to another corporation) can, and it must show serious financial loss. Individual practitioners named in a review are in a different position. Second, a review that is fake rather than defamatory may raise issues under the Australian Consumer Law, such as misleading or deceptive conduct. We explain both in our guides to defamatory Google reviews and fake Google reviews.

NSW Fair Trading administers the Australian Consumer Law in the state alongside the ACCC. It handles consumer complaints and compliance, but it does not remove Google reviews. A business that suspects a competitor is posting fake reviews can report the conduct to the regulators, but removal from Google Maps goes through Google itself.

How we work with Sydney businesses remotely

  1. You send the review links and your context through the free assessment form.
  2. We assess each review against Google's policies and the relevant law and tell you which ones have a realistic basis for a complaint and which do not.
  3. For reviews we take on, we prepare and lodge the complaint through Google's official channels, with supporting evidence.
  4. You pay only for reviews that are actually removed. See pricing for the per-review rates.

Our team is based outside Australia and works by email. Sydney is between nine and eleven hours ahead of the United Kingdom, depending on daylight saving at each end, so email or the assessment form is usually easier than phoning our UK number. We reply to assessment requests within 24 hours. How long Google takes depends on the evidence and its own process, and no one can promise a timeframe.

If a review is hurting your Sydney business and you think it crosses the line, send it through for a free, no-obligation assessment and we will give you a straight answer on whether it is worth challenging.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have an office in Sydney I can visit?

No. G-DEFENCE is operated by XSR Agency LTD, a company registered in Cyprus, and serves all of Australia remotely. Everything, from assessment to lodging complaints with Google, is done online, so there is nothing a face-to-face meeting would add.

A patient left a review mentioning their treatment. Can I reply with the facts?

Be careful. Health practitioners are bound by privacy obligations, and confirming someone was a patient or discussing their care in a public reply can create a bigger problem than the review itself. A short, neutral reply inviting them to contact the practice directly is usually safer. If the review contains false allegations or someone else's personal details, it may be worth an assessment.

Does it matter that the reviewer lives outside NSW?

For a Google policy complaint, no: Google applies the same content policy wherever the reviewer is. For any legal claim, where the material was published and where the harm occurred can matter, which is a question for a lawyer.

Can NSW Fair Trading order Google to take a review down?

No. NSW Fair Trading deals with consumer complaints and compliance under the Australian Consumer Law. It does not moderate Google Maps. Removal requests go to Google, and court orders are a separate legal process.

Our competitor down the road seems to have posted several one-star reviews. What evidence helps?

Anything that links the accounts to the competitor or shows the reviewers were never customers: timing patterns, the reviewer's other activity, matching wording, and your booking or sales records. Our guide to evidence for review complaints explains what is useful and what is not.
