Google Review Removal in Canberra

Canberra businesses serve a well-informed, research-minded population, so a fake or defamatory Google review can do real damage. G-DEFENCE provides Google review removal for ACT businesses where a review breaks Google's rules or the law, working remotely through official channels.

The ACT does defamation differently on paper

Unlike the states, the ACT does not have a stand-alone Defamation Act. Its defamation law sits in Chapter 9 of the Civil Law (Wrongs) Act 2002 (ACT), which implements the national Model Defamation Provisions. The substance is aligned with NSW and Victoria: the Stage 1 reforms commenced in the ACT on 1 July 2021, adding the serious harm element, mandatory concerns notices and the single publication rule, and the Stage 2 amendments on digital intermediaries commenced on 1 July 2024.

The usual corporate limitation applies. Most companies cannot sue for defamation; only an "excluded corporation", a not-for-profit or a business with fewer than 10 employees that is not related to another corporation, can, and it must show serious financial loss. Individuals named in a review, such as a practitioner or a director, may be in a different position. Our page on what makes a Google review defamatory explains the elements.

Access Canberra is the ACT's regulator for the Australian Consumer Law, through the Commissioner for Fair Trading. It is the first point of contact for consumer complaints in the territory and can act on unfair or misleading conduct, but it does not moderate Google reviews.

Canberra’s review landscape

Canberra's economy is built around the federal public service and the professional, consulting, education and health services around it. Customers here tend to research carefully and read beyond the star rating, which cuts both ways: a well-handled reply to criticism is noticed, but so is a detailed, false allegation. Review-heavy sectors include medical and allied health, law and other professional services, fitness and personal services. See our pages on medical practices, law firms and fitness centres.

Canberra is also a relatively small market spread across distinct town centres, so many businesses compete for the same few thousand households. That makes reviews from competitors, former staff and people with a personal grievance more likely, and more damaging, than in a large city.

What G-DEFENCE can and cannot do

  • We can assess each review against Google's content policy and the relevant law, explain which have a realistic basis for removal, and prepare and lodge complaints through Google's policy and legal-removal channels.
  • We cannot make Google remove anything. Removal decisions are Google's, and genuine negative reviews from real customers are lawful and normally stay up.
  • We do not give legal advice or act in court. If a review warrants proceedings, you will need an ACT lawyer.

Our process page walks through each step, and our pricing page lists the per-review rates. You are invoiced only when a review is removed.

Contact from Canberra

G-DEFENCE has no Canberra office or staff. Canberra observes daylight saving in line with Sydney, so it is nine to eleven hours ahead of the United Kingdom depending on the season. The assessment form and email are the most practical routes, and we reply to assessment requests within 24 hours. Timeframes after that depend on the evidence and Google's own process.

If a review of your Canberra business looks fake, comes from someone with a conflict of interest or makes false claims, send it to us for a free assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t I find an ACT Defamation Act?

Because there isn't one. The ACT's defamation provisions are in Chapter 9 of the Civil Law (Wrongs) Act 2002, which implements the same national model as the states' Defamation Acts.

Our clients include government agencies. Can we reply to reviews mentioning a project?

Check your contractual confidentiality obligations first. A neutral reply that does not confirm or discuss the engagement is usually safest. If the review discloses confidential or personal information, it may be worth an assessment.

Do you cover Queanbeyan as well as Canberra?

Yes. We serve all of Australia remotely. Note that Queanbeyan is in New South Wales, so NSW law and NSW Fair Trading rather than ACT law and Access Canberra would normally be relevant there.

Will Access Canberra investigate a competitor posting fake reviews?

You can report suspected misleading conduct to Access Canberra or the ACCC. Whether they act depends on their priorities, and neither will remove the review for you. Removal requests go to Google.
